| One
of the most attractive things about Basalt is location! Nestled
in the Roaring Fork Valley, Basalt is located between Aspen and
Glenwood Springs on Highway 82.
Basalt is close to white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, backpacking,
horseback riding and skiing in Aspen (just 30 minutes away). Ruedi
Reservoir has six campgrounds and several picnic grounds. The Roaring
Fork and Frying Pan Rivers offer world-class fly and cast fishing
waters. In the winter, cross-country skiing and snow-mobiling trails
cut across the Mountain Hut System, which are available for such
excursions.
In the early 1900's immigrants from Italy and Switzerland worked
in the railroad mines and coal smelters. When the railroad left
town the workers started ranching. Small restaurants, boutiques
and art galleries dot the Main Street of Basalt. On the outskirts
of town riverfront properties and some vacant land are still on
the market. Basalt is a nice place to own a home or condo.
