Carbondale Colorado

In the early 1800's settlers raised sheep and grew potatoes for over 50 years. Potatoes soon became the largest crop in the Carbondale economy. In the late 1800's marble extraction, coal mining and railroad construction brought many workers to the area. The town was named in honor of Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Mount Sopris was named after early settler Richard Sopris.
The Ute Indians were the first people to inhabit Carbondale. Unfortunately, by the late 1880's the U.S. Government relocated the Ute's to a reservation in southwest colorado. It is said by many locals that the Ute's have left a curse on the valley which in time was responsible for floods and mine disasters on the upper Crystal River. To see this thriving area today, no one believes there's any curse left on the area today!
Carbondale is a quaint little town consisting mainly of retail stores, lodging, agriculture and the area. The towns economic stability does not depend on any one industry but a myriad of talented people. Close to Carbondale is the relatively new Aspen Glen Country Club boasting 630 homes and a championship golf course designed by Jack Nichlaus.
Carbondale is home to Colorado Rocky Mountain School, a private high school that is prepratory school for grades 9-12. Carbondale is close to hiking, skiing and biking and the White River National Forest is adjacent to town. Carbondale has affordable town homes, condos, and houses.
