Twelve
miles from Glenwood Springs lies the small town of New Castle, population
679. Mining on the Burning Mountain Range was the mainstay for New
Castle in the 1800's. The "Legend of Burning Mountain"
is the title of a recent book written by New Castle resident Dale
Schull who explains the fire that set the underground coal on fire
and continues to slowly burn to this day. In 1883 a mine superintendent
named Samuel Wraith named New Castle after Newcastle upon Tyne in
England, where Wraith was born. Many years after the mine was sealed,
locals still report seeing smoke rising from Burning Mountain just
north of town. New Castle has a historical museum that contains
many old photographs available for public viewing. Driving north
of town, many old cabins and home sites line old Buford Road. Continuing
north, small acreages and horse properties can be seen on the way
to Harvey Gap, a state recreation area that hosts some of the best
fishing in the area. Boating, swimming, hiking and windsurfing are
just a few of the many activities enjoyed in this area. New Castle
continues to be a popular destination for hunting and fishing as
hundreds of hunters descend on the area each hunting season, for
deer and elk. Fishermen enjoy trout fishing on the Colorado River.
The town location next to the White River National Forest attracts
snow-mobilers and cross-country skiers.Another new book titled "Newcastles
United" features this town and 23 others around the world.
The book was published in October 2000 in England. A second phase
will feature a touring photographic exhibition opening first in
England and later traveling to the United Kingdom and abroad.New
Castle is welcoming new growth in the last few years. A super market
and bowling alley are just one mile from Main Street. New Castle
features four neighborhoods: Apple Tree Park (a trailer park), Burning
Mountain Avenue, Castle Valley Ranch, and downtown. If you are looking
for serenity you have always dreamed about but could not afford,
New Castle is still affordable. Call Mytt Anderson for further details
on the wonderful area!
