Rifle
has a mild climate in the winter months averaging between 20 and
40 degrees Fahrenheit. Rifle is mainly a ranching town with large
pastoral views just outside the city. Just 15 minutes north of town
if Rifle Gap Falls and reservoir. Both areas offer hiking, fishing,
boating, and most water sports. BLM land and White River National
Forest offer hunting, camping, and horseback riding. There are many
equestrian properties, vacant land, homes, and modular homes available
in the Rifle area.
Rifle got it's name from an explorer that left his rifle by a creek
and upon retrieving the rifle he names the nearby camp Rifle. The
Colorado Historical Society states that in 1880 a soldier left his
gun by a stream and that stream was named Rifle Creek. No matter
how exactly Rifle was named, Rifle is unique because there is no
other town in the U.S. by that name.
